Why Would Police Arrest These Guys Here for a Better Life Two Illegal Immigrants Believed to Be Trafficking?
Question by ShoeShine: Why would police arrest these guys here for a better life two illegal immigrants believed to be trafficking?
Memphis, Tn – Memphis Police say a several months long investigation results in the arrests of two illegal immigrants believed to be trafficking drugs from Mexico.
30 year old Carlos Esquivel and 26 year old Miguel Arozco were arrested Tuesday after Memphis Police officers found drugs in an East Memphis apartment. MPD says officers confiscated $ 1000, more than two grams of powder cocaine and sixty seven pounds of marijuana.
“Sixty-seven pounds is significant,” says Memphis Police Lt. Mike Shearin. “Very large to find in an apartment in Memphis.”
The drugs were found using the help of a Memphis Police canine. The canine units make drug detection easier and safer for officers.
“Sometimes people will booby trap narcotics with different agents that can harm officers,” says Sgt. Murray Wilson, who works with a canine officer.
The dogs are trained to sit and stay when they first smell drugs. It can alert officers to key evidence, like in the case of Esquivel and Arozco.
“These dogs have been deemed reliable by all the courts,” says Wilson. “That gives us probable cause to search vehicles or other residences when we get an alert from the dog.”
Memphis Police say the suspects are likely drug traffickers bringing marijuana from Mexico.
“Most of the drugs we see come from Mexico,” says Shearin.
In the case of Tuesday’s arrest, Memphis Police officers have called in immigration officers to do their own investigation.
“They’re going to investigate the case,” says Shearin. “We found out both of the gentlemen arrested were illegal aliens. Once their case is adjudicated and they serve their time, they’ll be deported.”
Both suspects are being held on $ 350,000 bond and are expected in court Thursday.
