Tennessee Williams – Project for Advanced Acting 🙂 Tennessee Williams was born on March the 26th 1911 in Columbus Mississippi. He lived with his sister, Rose, and his brother, Dakin. His father was a traveling shoe salesman and his mother was a prime example of a true Southern Belle. Tennessee Williams spent a lot of his childhood with his grandfather in Clarksdale Mississippi. His grandfather was a priest. Williams was very close to his sister Rose and stuck with her through the years, even after she was diagnosed as schizophrenic and was institutionalized. His character Laura Wingfield in the play The Glass Menagerie is based on Rose. As a small child, Williams suffered from diphtheria and had to stay in his home for a year. He became very weak. His mother’s search for the perfect home and his father’s heavy-drinking and violence forced the family to move several times around the city. He studied at the University of Missouri, the Washington University in Saint Louis, and the Dramatic Workshop of the New School in New York. Some of Tennessee William’s major plays and screenplays include: The Glass Menagerie, A Street Car Named Desire, The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond, Suddenly Last Summer, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. His influences were Anton Chekhov, DH Lawrence, William Faulkner, Emil Dickenson, Ernest Hemingway, and more. Tennessee Williams was found dead in his hotel suite in New York on February 25, 1983.
