How Did This Fight End? Frazier-Herenton?
Question by RI? Z#????h ? !: How did this fight end? Frazier-Herenton?
Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton, who ended his career as an amateur boxer 40 years ago, is training to go up against Joe Frazier. Herenton and Frazier square off on Thursday at the Peabody Hotel in a three-round benefit match for the Shelby County Drug Court. The mayor, now 66, won his first championship at the age of 14. But even at his height, he was never in Frazier’s league, so he had to sign a waiver that absolves the former heavyweight champion from responsibility for any damage. “He’s been hit by the hardest hitters in the world, so I don’t think I’ll do much damage,” Herenton told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. But Herenton is taking the bout seriously. He has been training for several weeks with the manager of the police boxing gym and has cut down on desserts and wine. Frazier used his left hook against greats like Buster Mathis and Muhammad Ali. Herenton plans to keep his own best move a secret. “I know what he has, but he doesn’t know what I have,” he said.
